Illmatic: HipHops Greatest Album? Or Just Plain Overrated

I have been skeptic to bring this topic up(Just to avoid offending some of you sensitive hiphop enthusiasts) but since I was 10 years old I have wondered why out of all the Hip-Hop albums that ever were in the History of the Game Why is Illmatic considered the greatest album of all time.
Of course we are coming from a time in history when only very few entities dictated what we liked and didn’t like and the biases were clear. With the change in how media as a whole operates (thanks to the Net) we are open to draw our own conclusions and make up our minds without being forced by publications that have their own opinions and biases and whose criteria we needed to question.
Now I was and still am a big Nas supporter but when it comes to Illmatic I just don’t see how it was determined to be the “best Hip-hop album of all time” When I revisit the album and see the climate of Hip-hop in 1994 for what it was I can point out a good 5-6 albums that could have easily been considered.
I am lead to ask a couple of questions

1) Was it based solely on lyrics?
2) The beats (which I have always had a problem with when it comes to Nas)
3) Who exactly voted for or against this notion?
4) Why didn’t the sales match such critical acclaim?
5) Why not the.. The Chronic (1992), Doggystyle (1994), Me against the world (1994-1995), Ready to die (1994), Reasonable Doubt, All eyes on Me (1995-1996), Life after Death(1997)
6) Name a single song from Illmatic that is still played to this day.

Now don’t get it twisted Nas is an impeccable lyricist and definitely a legend in the game but even in his own catalogue I have 3 albums that I can boldly state were/are better than Illmatic. If this album was so great why didn’t it have the appeal that could make it surpass any social barriers (regionally, racially etc)?
I believe a classic need to apply in more than just a few ways to be considered as such. A classic needs to appeal to many people. How many songs out of Illmatic do we here in clubs today? I am sure you will hear “Gin and Juice” “Nuthin but a G Thang” “One More Chance” “Juicy” “Aint no N****a” “Dead presidents” etc which all came from very well received, very well rounded albums of that time.
Now before the Hip-Hop community crucifies me for this I urge you to take a good look and ask yourself how many copies of Illmatic have been sold in the 15 years the album has been out and how diverse was the demographic that purchased a copy. Once you do that compare the album to its other albums I have likened it to wether you agree or not and maybe you will see my point.

I AM BACK!!!

I took some time off to handle some non hip-hop related business and it turns out my hiatus pissed some people off(worry not fellow bloggers I got you). On the other hand I still had hip-hop in my business so it was all for a similar purpose (I will keep you posted of the progress).

Unfortunately this week hip-hop suffered another loss (RIP Dolla) to senseless the violence our community is suffering from. Why can't anybody whoop ass anymore? I am not advocating any form of violence but killing a man is a little bit extreme.

A lot has happened and I am trying to stay on top of things so bare with me. If I forget to mention something I apologize. Its funny the blog began as a way for me to give back but it has turned into a responsibility that I need to nurture and take care of (I love it that much) so I am learning how to balance all my other ventures with this and I think I got it figured out now.

First of all I will be the one of 1st to state the game is definitely in a better place thanks to Jadakiss, Rick Ross, Camron, Eminem, Red n Meth, Busta and every mainstream artist including hiphopabc that has chosen to keep that formula lacking in today's mainstream.
Big up to my peeps from urban XL doing big things out there in the UK and for all you hiphopabc followers in Barbados or visiting go out show love and support my dude Moonlight this weekend for that Trey Songz concert.

Turns out Joe Budden may have bitten more than he can chew and this might be a good time to spit it out. Not too many people took light his comments towards Method Man and now Busta & Redman are taking shots on behalf of Tical. Word of advice to Joey, I am a big fan but even I can't ride with you on this one.

I also heard a rumor that TLC might be including a new Member to the group to replace Lisa "Left Eye" 'Lopez and it apparently is none other than Brandy TBC hmmmmmm.

Stay Tuned http://hiphopabc.blogspot.com/ will keep you posted on what is new and whats poppin and also remind u to keep this thing alive, Happy Memorial day

Nick Canon VS Eminem!!!!

So in case you have been living under a rock, and you haven't been paying attention to whats poppin i am here to bring you up to speed.
For the past 2 weeks or so Eminem and Mariah's Carey's husband, Nick Canon have been going at it and its getting more and more heated.
1st of all I have mad respect for both parties but for entirely different reasons. This could proove interesting but so far I can't tell what direction we are going especially becasue they are not in the same field.

So far there has been shots fired from both sides

"So as I continued to semi enjoy Marshall’s rhyme scheme and flow, I mean let’s be honest dude used to be incredible. He was a witty lyrist with dope delivery and timing. Some even say, one of the best to ever do it. I had nothing but respect for this dude. But all of a sudden I hear my name in the verse! My first reaction was like, “This is his new shit??? Wow, that’s too bad…” Then I felt sorry for him because he must really be stuck in the past. Not only has his music not evolved, but also homeboy is still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn’t let him get to second base from 8 years ago! He even describes his desperate lameness in this bad excuse for storytelling track. That’s some real middle school shit right there! (What type of grown ass man lies about getting with a chick) Only Slim Lamey! LOL!

Even though most people don’t know that I’m nice in the ring and have been training in boxing and Martial Arts for years that would just be childish and silly of me to bully this dude. He clearly has been picked on all his life and I would hate to add to his deep-rooted pain. As we all know he has had a hard life and has major insecurity issues and is very confused and unhappy with himself. So a guy like that doesn’t really need another ass whoopin, he needs a hug. We should really pray for his troubled heart."
-Nick Cannon

Mothers Day special: Rick Ross Baby Mama "Tia Kemp"

"Them N*****Z is characters."
Tony Yayo. "Aiight Tia Happy mothers Day"
50 i think should put some better use to the platform he has available. Tia is not useful to hip-hop i am not too concerned with the personal details about her life why is that important?
Doesn't 50 need to channel those funds to reviving Lloyd Banks career and helping G-Unit projects blossom.
This chick is a bird she put her personal life out there for public scrutiny for shoes and some bags.

Trick Daddy Fires At Rick Ross & Trina "He is a kid that needs discipline" WH OA!

After years of speculated beef between Trick daddy and Rick Ross, the rivalry has finally become public. Initially Trick had maintained a very neutral stance even after being named as the person behind exposing as a Rick Ross as a former Correctional officer.
Rick Ross took shots at Trick later retracting his statement and Trick remained silent until this week in an interview with Shade 45's Angela Yee.
In the interview Trick goes off at not only Rick Ross, but he also takes light Jabs at Trina for not acknowledging his contribution to Miami Hiphop scene.
Listen and drop a comment.

Breaking News "Grand Hustles Muscle" Alphamega ( Govt Informant)

According to www.thesmokinggun.com govt documents have surfaced and they are indicating your Boy Alphamega "Grand hustle's Muscle" might have taken the cheese some years back in a federal Case involving a well Known Atlanta Heroin Trafficker.
Not only is Alphamega said to have help the DEA he was also used by the state to testify against other criminals.
Below is the Article as Posted by the www.thesmokinggun.com

Billed as the protégé of rapper/gun enthusiast T.I., Cedric "Alfamega" Zellars is a convicted felon whose songs brag about his status as an "original gangster" and contain de rigeur references to police tape, automatic weapons, and murder. Zellars, who records for T.I.'s Grand Hustle Entertainment, is a hulking 6' 4", calls himself "The Grand Hustle Muscle," and proclaims, "I'm a real hood." What he does not mention, though, is his prior work as a Drug Enforcement Administration informant who snitched out criminal cohorts and testified as a government witness at the trial of an Atlanta heroin trafficker. Court records show that Zellars began working with law enforcement officials after he was sentenced in September 1995 to 110 months in a federal gun case (Zellars, who had a prior felony robbery conviction, was collared for selling weapons to an undercover federal agent). Zellars "agreed to cooperate with authorities and was debriefed" about the criminal activity of several individuals. "In particular he was debriefed concerning the drug trafficking activities of a Mr. Ali Baaqar," according to a government court filing, a copy of which you'll find below. During his cooperation against Baaqar, Zellars met with a DEA agent and a federal prosecutor, and subsequently testified at trial. "Ali Baaqar was convicted of conspiracy to distribute heroin based upon the trial testimony of [Zellars] and others." In return for his snitching, Zellars had 18 months shaved off his prison term when he was resentenced in July 1997 by Judge J. Owen Forrester. A court order signed by Forrester came after federal prosecutors petitioned the jurist to reduce Zellars's sentence in light of his "substantial assistance to the Government." The disclosure of Zellars's informant past will likely not sit well with rap fans and performers alike, many of whom promote hip-hop's "Stop Snitching" doctrine. Additionally, since T.I. (real name: Clifford Harris) is soon headed to prison due to the work of a government informant, Zellars's time as a government asset could be a cause for tension around the Grand Hustle offices.

Unfortunately i just saw the papers and i hope they are not doctored cause that is the only way out of this one.

Return of The R & B Thug (Masspike Miles)

After signing to Rick Ross's Maybach Music, Bean Towns Masspike Miles seems to be picking up where fellow "R & B Thugs" such as Jaheim left. One thing you can definitely spot right off the rip is that Masspike has an edge very rare in today's R&B scene. A mixture of very clean vocals and street tales very opposite of what is standard of the genre.
with the current energy surrounding Ross and the label situation it is only a matter of time before the world sees what miles has to bring to the table.

young Buck Performs (where has he been)

Its been almost a year since the infamous "crying phone call" since we saw Ten-A-Keys own Buck Marley. I am definitely glad to see he is still active. I hope he and 50 cent can put the BS aside and release some music. A Young Buck Album is definitely necessary in the current climate of the Music Industry.
Although in this video whoever let the stank bomb could have at leased drank some water of gone to the bathroom. They cleared the entire club whoa!!!!!

Rick Ross VS 50 Cent PT 1

"steppin on you +Crew+ 'til them motherfuckers Crush
and makin sweet love to every women dat ya lust
I love to pay ya bills, can't wait to pay ya rent
Curtis Jackson baby mama, I ain't askin for a cent
Burn the house down (nigga), you gotta buy another
Don’t forget the gas can, jealous stupid motherfucker"

I like the rest of the Hip-Hop world went "why the hell would Rick Ross do this to himself"
All I could think was "damn he barely survived the whole correctional officer thing and now he is taking on 50 cent?" it seemed either too gutsy or just plain stupid.
Shortly after that 50 followed with a minor dis record that went unnoticed then came the infamous "Tia" Video i went whoa whoa whoa! its over for "The Boss"

I have been an avid Hip-Hop listener since Snoop and Dre Took on the whole Ruthless Records and never had i seen anything as disrespectful or kanaiving as the video with 50 and "Tia"
I personally could careless what the Rick Ross's baby-moms has to say nor do i care to take sides cause i am a fan of the Music i don't know either party enough to take it personally. All i do is appreciate the great entertainment that comes about when rappers go to war on wax.
Then came the curley skits and i was sure that "Deeper than Rap" was going to be pushed back and he would become another 50 cent statistic.

I like most people were sure there was no coming back for "The Boss". It seemed for a second that Rick Ross was loosing all control of his once promising career.
Then came the magnificent single which to me was the game changer and very crucial.

To be Continued
